Words and curation by Simon TK.

Third Eye – Behold the Angel of Frequency (Efficient Space)
I love this one beyond words. From the 90s Third Eye project which featured the legendary Ollie Olsen who sadly passed recently. This was lovingly reissued on the 3am spares comp on Efficient Space a few years back.

Ménage – Wayfarers & V Necks (Ménage Records)
Slinky heater from Naarm/Melbourne-based live act Menage. This one is nestled in a seven-track EP from back in 2020 and literally never leaves the bag. It’s the perfect mix of deep and luscious but hard-hitting for me, with those beautiful pitter-pattered gated vox. If you ever get a chance to catch their live set don’t sleep on it!

DJ Life – Bring the Beat Back (X-Kalay)
I’m so obsessed with this new one from DJ Life. It’s quick, zippy and soulful with a serious hook. A bit different from his other stuff and absolutely blew me away when he sent it to me. I think I’ve played it every set since I heard it 🙂

Space Biology – Brainstorm (Companion)
Okay this one isn’t exactly Australian, but does feature on a local label run by dear friends Pjenne and Millu, Companion. Ukrainian producer Ivanna Ivanivna aka Space Biology. Gorgeous unfolding textures with a nice step to it. Her whole release is incredible, one for the headphones for sure.

DJ PGZ – Energy Monstera (Yikes’ Off To Work Edit) (Butter Sessions)
Banger Alert!!!! Brand new one on legendary Naarm-based label Butter Sessions. This release is an East Coast x West collab between two absolute legends, DJ PGZ and Yikes. The whole thing is absolute fire. Play with caution, will cause serious damage!

Biftek – Machines Work (murmur)
Early pioneering electro-femme outfit popular in Australia in the late 90s and 2000s. I really love this squelchy number, and the lyrics seem particularly fitting in the AI era of today. Also check out member Nicole Skeltys’ project Artificial!

Narcotik – Conditions (Zero Tolerance Recordings)
One of my favourites from the ‘spooky’ era of Melbourne prog, and an absolute doof weapon. One of my favourite tunes to open with in the great outdoors. Check out the rest of the Zero Tolerance Recordings catalogue for more spooky goodness.

Command D – Musik (Pure Space)
Further proof that Andy Garvey’s Pure Space label can do no wrong. Absolute HEATER from Eora-based producer Command D. It’s rolling, tough and yet playful. Big tune!

Wicked Beat Sound System – Procession (Wicked Beat Records)
I first heard this song as part of an audiovisual art piece for Parrtjima, which is a big arts festival in Mparntwe/Alice Springs, in the central desert in the middle of so-called Australia. I heard this whilst watching light installations projected onto an entire mountain range. It hit so hard. I’ve opened with this so many times, including a memorable one on a rainy day at the beach stage at Strawberry Fields.

Reptant – Transcendents From The Outer Sphere (Craigie Knowes)
One of my all-time favourites from our reptilian overlord. On Boorloo/UK mainstay label Craigie Knowes. Bit of an old one this one, but I still play it so much. That acidic riff just provides the sickest backbone whilst the rest of the track unfolds and changes. Sounds great at different speeds and is the best to mix out of!

Ram Dass & Kriece – The Game (Waveform Records)
One for the trippers. I love this downtempo one from Boorloo/Perth producer Kriece. The mix of the Timothy Leary-esque spoken word from Ram Dass and the almost Weatherall-y chug make for a nice groove. On Waveform records out of Hawaii, be sure to check the rest of their catalogue.

Boo Boo, Mace & Nutcase – Digital Rubber (Rudolf C Mix) (Linale Records)
This one from true icons of the Australian electronic music scene, Boo Boo & Mace, aka Itch-E & Scratch-E and Sheriff Lindo. Expertly reworked here by Salt Mines label head Rudolf C

Morgan Wright – Have It (Digital Music Only)
Morgan Wright is one of my favourite and most versatile producers. From the ethereal trip-hop revivalist Acopia project, to the blistering prog and tech house of Mittens, to the stunning Digital Music Only (DMO) label. This tune shows that breadth again, it’s tweaked out and woozy, with a distinct pop sensibility.
